It certainly does not happen every day! A painting thought to be a work by an unknown artist is now attributed to Rembrandt. Eighteen months ago it had an estimated value of £20,000 and sold at an auction for £137,000; now when leading scholars have come to the conclusion that this is indeed a Rembrandt, the portrait is estimated to be worth £10,000,000. A great victory for the buyer, the Dutch art dealer Jan Six who apparently happens to be a direct descendant of one of Rembrandt's sitters. It is understood that Rembrandt painted the portrait in Amsterdam in 1634 or 1635. The artists would have been twenty eight or twenty nine years old.
Now, after the name of the artist is established, the painting is 100 times more expensive. Does it mean it suddenly became 100 times more beautiful?..
